Date of Passing

Monique D. LaBonte, age 65, of Preston, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 21, 2026, in Mystic following a brief illness. She was born in Bad Kreuznach, Germany, to Omer and Dolores LaBonte (Peloquin), where her father was active duty Army stationed at Rose Barracks.

She attended Sacred Heart School in Taftville, Connecticut. Monique was a proud 1978 graduate of the Academy of the Holy Family in Baltic. She entered the Academy in 1974 as the school community prepared to celebrate a milestone anniversary. Students, including Monique, were heavily involved in preparations for the celebration. That experience introduced her to the strength of community, the value of hard work, and a deep appreciation for legacy and preparation for the future — principles she carried with her always. During her years at the Academy, she served as senior class president and was a varsity basketball player, demonstrating both leadership and teamwork.

In July 1980, Monique began her career with Southern New England Telephone (SNET). Over the next 37 years, she held many different positions, building lasting friendships and earning the respect of her colleagues. A dedicated advocate for workers’ rights, she was deeply involved as a union leader with the Connecticut Union of Telephone Workers/Communication Workers of America, tirelessly supporting and representing her fellow employees. She retired in the fall of 2017, closing a remarkable chapter of service and commitment.

Monique’s devotion to her faith and community was unwavering. She was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Church and its choir beginning in November 1989, sharing her voice and fellowship for many years. She was also a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church in Preston. Beyond her parish involvement, she sang with the Preston Community Chorus from 1989 to 2004 and contributed many years of service to the Preston City Fair Committee. Monique was also an active member of the Taftville Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, always ready to lend her time and energy to support others.

She is survived by her sister, Suzanne Malinowski (LaBonte), and her husband, Piotr Malinowski, of Moosup; her brother, Ronald LaBonte and his wife, Rosalie, of Salem; her niece, Micaela Shaw (LaBonte), of Waterford; her nephew, Jason LaBonte, of Salem; as well as many close family members and dear friends whom she cherished.

Monique will be remembered for her strong voice — in song, in leadership, and in advocacy — and for her steadfast dedication to faith, family, and community.

She advocated for donations to be made in her memory to the Taftville Volunteer Fire Department or the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation.
